Waste management reduces the effect of waste on environment and health, while at the same time contributes to the economy and reuse of recycled resources. In other words, waste reduction, reusing and recycling contributes to preserving health and natural resources, as well as to creating new jobs and business opportunities. That is why it is important to manage and dispose of waste appropriately and carefully.
This project was focused on rehabilitation of the dumpsite Vrtijeljka, which represented one of the most dangerous ecological blackspots in the Municipality of Cetinje. Works conducted within the project included reallocation of certain quantities of existing waste in order to profile the body of the landfill; construction of drainage canals and excavation of absorption pits for atmospheric water; development of biogas drainage systems; and covering, recultivation and fencing of the terrain.
Thanks to these works, an illegal dumpsite on location Vrtijeljka was rehabilitated and its negative impact on air, soil and underground waters decreased. Today Vrtijeljka is a fully cleaned-up location. It is the first landfill that has been rehabilitated with the help of the European Union and, as such, represents a good example of the efficient use of EU funds.
