Disasters do not know borders

About the project

Montenegro and Albania are countries exposed to a wide range of hazards, including floods. As the level of disaster risk is high in both countries, this project was focused on improving protection from hazards, in the first place floods, through capacity building, awareness raising and cross-border cooperation in disaster risk reduction (DRR). It targeted the area of Montenegrin municipalities Podgorica, Bar and Ulcinj, and Shkodra region in Albania.

Within the project were organized a seminar on best EU practices in flood protection, trainings for representatives of institutions and services dealing with protection, rescue and emergency management, as well as cross-border field exercises. Other activities were related to procurement of equipment for protection from floods and weather forecasting, and updating of the databases on floods in the region of Shkodra Lake.

In short, this project resulted in improved technical and personnel capacity of institutions and services in charge of protection and rescue in targeted area. It also improved cooperation between protection and rescue units and institutions from Montenegro and Albania, and familiarised population in both countries with the risk of floods, preventive measures, and protection and rescue activities.
